Jasmine Reed:
What makes you different from other poets?

Lazyrus:
Every poet or lyricist have their own voice, their own style, etc… What I believe make me different, in particular, is that I don’t study others to emmulate. I am just me, embodying my uniqueness, infusing my lines with gems of wisdom, and always looking to raise the spirits of my listeners.

Jasmine Reed:
What was it like winning the 2016 Pure Ink Championship?

Lazyrus:
Spoken word, of all the arts in Buffalo gets the least amount of press and support. It’s always been really underground. Winning this one was a chance for me to change that by bringing Buffalo to the Individual World Poetry Slam for the first time ever and hopefully putting more eyes on our scene here. LOCAL PAPERS… TAKE NOTICE. YOU’VE SLEPT ON US TOO LONG. HAHA.lazyrus looking into camera

Jasmine Reed::
What inspired you to write “shock waves” ?

Lazyrus:
I used to do a little social experiment when I lived in Washington State where I’d wave or say hello to ten random people and see how many said hello back. It was about 4 out of ten. I always thought that the major problem with us, as people, was the lack of connectivity and understanding amongst us and believed that true progress begins with a simple “hello”.

Jasmine Reed:
That’s deep. What would you tell anyone who wants to be a poet?

Lazyrus:
Haha. That’s tough. For me, it was just something that called me. I really didn’t choose to be a poet, I just was. It’s hard to explain. I don’t think people can choose real passion. It chooses us. Maybe before we’re even born. As far as others go, if it’s in you, be that, keep writing, look to make ugly things beautiful, and pull the roses from the trash.

Jasmine Reed:
Cool. What are your goals for this 2016?

Lazyrus:
First, to make enough money to survive and feed my kids. Lol. As an artist, it can be a hard task. I do real estate as my “real” job so hopefully that’ll help out. Second, I would like to bring attention to this great art form and our local scene. Third, to Win the Individual World Poetry Slam in AZ and finally show the doubters who I am and what can be achieved through years of hard work and mastering a craft.
Determination is key! Push on brotha!

Jasmine Reed:
Would you ever want your kids to choose poetry as their occupation?

Lazyrus:
Not if they want to have a husband, wife, family, etc… Only because there is little money to be made for most of us and the road life has destroyed many things for many people. If they choose to stay single for awhile until they get themselves financially situated then “HELL YES” if that’s their passion in life. Always have to support their passions because many people go their whole lives without ever really finding theirs.

Jasmine Reed:
That’s true. Finally, what advice do you have for the 716 Live Team?

Lazyrus:
I know J -Heat and what he brings to any table he sits at. I believe in his leadership abilities and all I can say is to stick with his vision and 716 Live will be ok. 😃

Jasmine Reed:
Thanks for the interview. Much love from us at 716 Live

Lazyrus:
My pleasure. Thank YOU guys for takking with me. Be well, Peace.
